Hadrurus spadix is a species of scorpion found in the southwestern United States, particularly in parts of Arizona, California, and Nevada. It belongs to the family Caraboctidae, and it is often recognized for its relatively large size, although smaller than H. arizonensis.

HABITAT

🌍 Geographic Range:

Hadrurus spadix ranges mainly in the Great Basin Desert (Nevada, western Utah, southern Idaho, eastern Oregon), preferring cooler, higher desert areas. H. arizonensis is far more widespread, covering much of the Southwest U.S. and northern Mexico. Other Hadrurus species are localized to smaller regions. Where spadix and arizonensis overlap, intergrades appear.

🏡 Microhabitat Preferences:

Hadrurus spadix lives in cooler, higher-elevation deserts of the Great Basin, favoring sandy or loose soils for deep burrows, often in areas with sparse vegetation. This sets it apart from H. arizonensis, which prefers hotter, lowland deserts.

Physical Description

📏Size:

Hadrurus spadix is one of the largest scorpions in North America, commonly reaching lengths of 11–13 cm. They are usually some of the smaller Hadrurus species. Like its close relative Hadrurus arizonensis, it relies heavily on burrowing to survive in desert environments.

🎨Coloration:

In terms of colour, H. spadix is best known for its striking contrast: a yellow body, legs, and tail offset by a completely black back and carapace. This bold patterning distinguishes it from H. arizonensis, which is mostly pale yellow, and gives rise to the common name “black desert hairy scorpion.”

The dark dorsal surface not only provides camouflage in rocky or shadowed habitats but also serves as the main feature used to identify the species.
